Names of the Doctrine: What is the difference between “Daime” and “SANTO DAIME®”

It is said that Mestre Irineu did not use the term “Santo Daime” – he only called it “Daime”, or “the Daime”. He was famously quoted for saying “o Daime e meu” – “The Daime is mine”.

Mestre did not refer to his center as a “church” and worked towards good relations with both the Catholic and Protestant churches despite their discrimination and persecution against him.

This means you can possibly get in legal trouble for using the term “SANTO DAIME” without the consent of ICEFLU/Mapia in case they wanted to take legal action against you – we only know of one time this has happened in the case of “Ceu da Nova Vida”. This makes Ceu do Mapia and ICEFLU legally the official church of “Santo Daime®”. They use their “®” registered trademark symbol on their website, such as with their Somos Midam financial campaign. They have owned this trademark since 2017-2018, but have popularized the term throughout the world for at least the last 40 years.

The trademarks are covering the following WIPO classes:

  • Class 45 – Legal services; security services for the physical protection of tangible property and individuals; personal and social services rendered by others to meet the needs of individuals.
  • Class 30 – Class 30 includes mainly foodstuffs of plant origin, except fruits and vegetables, prepared or preserved for consumption, as well as auxiliaries intended for the improvement of the flavour of food.
  • Class 41 – Class 41 includes mainly services consisting of all forms of education or training, services having the basic aim of the entertainment, amusement or recreation of people, as well as the presentation of works of visual art or literature to the public for cultural or educational purposes. Religious services are also covered under this category.

There is a center in the south of Brazil called “Ceu da Nova Vida”. Despite their name matches the format of a mapia style place, they do not follow Mapia and work as an independent center that incorporates both elements from traditional daime centers that follow Mestre and other features from the line of Padrinho Sebastiao, but they do not sing the mapia hinarios. They refer to themselves as a Church of Santo Daime since before ICEFLU owned the trademark, but did not register their business name at that time. They later formalized themselves as a legal organization and tried to register their name as “CENTRO ESPIRITUAL CÉU DA NOVA VIDA SANTO DAIME” but they were blocked legally in doing so since Mapia already was the owner of the name at this point. They had to start just calling themselves “DAIME” and not “SANTO DAIME” for legal reasons. They also changed their logo. This naming dispute of their center was resolved on 2019-09-04 under filing number “918133564”.

Daime Centers and Santo Daime Chuches

It is said that Mestre Irineu did not found any church of Santo Daime. He founded his spiritual center that was known under a few different names such as “Centro Livre”, “Center of Illumination Christian Universal Light”, and “Center of Irridation Divine Light of the Mind”. None of these names refer to any church.

This is why the video of the fake audio recording of Mestre was so controversial. Because it makes claim that Mestre founded a church of Santo Daime.

Mestre started using the term “Daime” after the time that he received the hymn “Estrela D’agua” with the line “Daime forca daime amor”. Before then, the drink was just referred to as huasca (ayahuasca), and Mestre Irineu was a huasquero (ayahuasquero). It is also said that Mestre Irineu did not use the term “Daimista” and that was also an term that came around after his death, and popularized worldwide through ICEFLU’s Church of Santo Daime .

However, during the end of the life of Mestre in the late 1960s the term “Santo Daime” started to become used in Alto Santo by some members. However it is claimed that Mestre nor his oldest members who had worked with him for decades said it. It even appears in the CICLU statute which we have a translated copy published on the website. After the death of Mestre, the term “Santo Daime” had become mainstream between the years 1972-1974, being used by at least some people in all lines/groups. However that was not something instituted by Mestre. There is an Alto Santo documentary on YouTube where you can see members Fransisco Granjeiro and Joao Facundes there cooking the beverage and they are calling it “santo daime”.

Many groups today who follow the teachings of Mestre may go the extra emphasis to avoid any use of the term “Santo Daime”, not only to avoid any possible legal repercussion, but also to make the point that they are following what Mestre taught and not other teachings and continuations that came later. They refer to themselves as Daime centers, and also avoid using the term church to describe their activities.

It is also important to note that “Santo Daime” refers to the name of the “religion of ayahuasca” where it is considered an Amazonian plant religion spread through the world through the line of Padrinho Sebastiao and ICEFLU. These Santo Daime groups that are connected with Mapia generally always refer to themselves as churches, both in Brazil and around the world. The “I” in ICEFLU is for “igreja” meaning “church”.

“The Daime” as established by Mestre Irineu is not considered a religion. The term used by Alto Santo and traditional groups in Rio Branco to describe the Daime is that it is a “Christian Doctrine”. The religion is Christianity (and based on examination of the hymns, one can see it looks closest in its beliefs to Catholicism – and the CICLU Statute even specifically mentions the “Catholic Faith”) and and the Daime is a doctrine taught by Mestre in his spiritual center. There are no claims made of any new religion based on plants.

That being said, many followers of the doctrine even who continued working at Alto Santo did use the term “Santo Daime” and never were members of ICEFLU.
